19-year-old Samantha Laney was murdered on 21 February 2012 at her father's home in Clayton, Newcastle-under-Lyme. She had recently ended her relationship with 19-year-old Thomas Dalton and moved out of the flat they had shared. On the day of the murder, Dalton armed himself with a kitchen knife, cycled to the home of Samantha's father and waited for her to return. When Samantha arrived, he forced his way into the house and fatally stabbed her in the back in front of other people. Dalton fled the scene but was arrested by police within an hour. He was convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 21 years.
